Work is such a time-consuming part of our lives, and yet it’s often the area we talk to God about the least. I think a lot of us have gotten so used to just pushing through our day-to-day struggles at our 9- 5s that we don't even believe that joy and fulfillment are even possible in this area.

But what if they are? What if we started looking at our jobs through God’s lens?

How much more intentional would we be in our interactions with our coworkers or the customers we serve?

How much more purpose would we see in our roles, knowing that God didn’t place us there by accident?

How much more joyful would we be going into work knowing that every second we spend there is not wasted but an opportunity for God's plan to play out?

God cares about every single part of our lives, but the amount of peace, joy, and fulfilment we feel is directly correlated with whether or not we invite Him into that area of our life. These journaling prompts are here to help you begin or continue the process of inviting Him into your work life (how you feel about it, any anxiety you may feel regarding it, and anything else that's on your heart that you want to unpack with Him).

Addressing your journal entries to God

As someone who loves journaling and already does it frequently, I noticed a huge difference in my journaling time when I started addressing my journal entries to God. Instead of “Dear Journal” or “Dear Self,” I start my journal entries with “Hey God,” “Dear Jesus,” or even just “Good morning, God.”

It's a simple shift, but it allows you to feel more connected to God and to tangibly invite Him into your mind, your thoughts, and your life! As you go through these prompts and write out your thoughts, I encourage you to try it. Address your journal entries to God and treat your journaling time as a time to check in with Him about whatever is on your mind!

1. How do you really feel about your job right now?

Write to God about it. Be open and honest with Him about how you really feel.

2. Have you found yourself just pushing through your workdays lately?

Write to God about what that's been like for you. What's been going on? What has led you to this place in your work life? Be open and honest with God about all of it and ask Him to help you move from a space of surviving to thriving.

3. In what ways do you sense God might be using your current job to shape you?

Write to God about it. Be open and honest with Him about the growing pains you've been experiencing at your job and how you feel they've been shaping you.

4. What relationships at work (coworkers, bosses, customers) have been challenging or encouraging?

Write to God about them. Ask for His wisdom, patience, or gratitude in navigating those relationships.

5. What are the parts of your job that bring you anxiety or stress?

Write to God about them. Be open and honest with Him about it all and surrender those burdens to Him.

Think of this as putting 1 Peter 5:7 into practice by bringing your burdens to God.

6. Do you believe joy and fulfillment are possible in your current job?

Write to God about it. Be open and honest with Him about how you feel.

7. How have you seen God show up in your work life recently?

Write to Him about it and thank Him for the ways He has been showing up for you.

8. Is there anything at work you need to let go of—control, comparison, resentment, fear, pressure?

Write to God about it. Be open and honest with Him about whatever it is and ask Him to help you let it go.

9. How would you approach your work shift differently if you really believed God placed you there on purpose?

Do a brain dump of how differently your work day would look like and how your heart posture and your attitude towards your work would change. Do a bullet point list if it's easier, and ask God to help you live out the things you wrote.

10. Is there a coworker or customer you feel nudged to pray for or love better?

Who are they? Write their name down and talk to God about the nudge you've been feeling. Then write out a prayer for that person.

11. What dreams or hopes do you have for your work life, short-term or long-term?

Don’t hold back, write to God about all of them.

12. What does “faithfulness at work” look like to you right now?

Regardless of what happens with your job, what would it look like for you to be faithful where God has you right now, Write to God about it and ask Him to help you.
