There are seasons in life where you need additional guidance and practical tips on how to lean on God in your specific situation. In those seasons, I've found it helpful to look for books that speak to what I'm going through and provide Biblical guidance on how to keep going. 1. When God Says Wait by Elizabeth Laing Thompson
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I now recommend it to anyone in a waiting season, trying to hold on to their faith as they grow weary in the wait. In this book, Elizabeth Laing Thompson uses examples of people in the Bible who had to wait on God, as well as her own story of waiting on God to encourage readers to trust in God as they wait on Him. If waiting on God's timing is hard for you, this book will strengthen your trust in His plan. It offers encouragement and wisdom for those times when it feels like God is silent, reminding you that His delays are not denials but divine timing. Get your copy here!
2. Saved and Suicidal* by Tari Cox
This book was the first time I felt seen as a Christian who struggles with their mental health. It often feels taboo to openly talk about mental health within the Christian community without receiving advice or comments that make you feel like less of a Christian for struggling with your mental health. If that has been your experience, I highly recommend this book as it will help you feel seen in your struggles. This book shows you that you can lean on God during your darkest times and that even when things feel hopeless, God is still in the midst of it all. Get your copy here!
*There are some mentions of suicide attempts in the book so this is a trigger warning.
3. When God Says Go by Elizabeth Laing Thompson
This is another impactful book by Elizabeth Laing Thompson that focuses this time on times when God is calling you to do things that low-key feel scary. In this book, like her previous ones, Elizabeth Laing Thompson uses examples of people in the Bible who were called by God to lead or take leaps of faith to encourage readers to embrace God's call to action, even when it seems daunting. If you've been feeling called by God to do something that feels daunting or overwhelming, I encourage you to read this book. It will provide the reassurance you need as you step out in faith to do what God has called you to do. Get your copy here!
4. Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer
This was one of the first books I read on my faith walk as I struggled to discern when God was speaking to me. It's set up like a Bible study and is filled with practical and Biblical insights to help you grow in your ability to discern when God is speaking to you. If you struggle to discern God's voice, this book is for you! Get your copy here!
5. When God Says No by Elizabeth Laing Thompson
Nobody likes to hear "No" and I think sometimes we overlook the disappointment we feel when we want something and God says "No". I remember going through a tough season where I was struggling to accept God's "No" and this book really helped shift my perspective and thaw my heart towards God. In this book, like her previous ones, Elizabeth Laing Thompson uses examples of people in the Bible who God said "No" to, to show readers that they're not alone in facing those challenging moments when God's answer to our prayers is not what we hoped for.
My favorite moment that she brought up was Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane asking for the cup of suffering that was awaiting Him to be taken away and the answer was "No" (Luke 22:41-45). This was a humbling reminder that even Jesus (for our sake) received a "No "from the Father. If you've been struggling with disappointment and low-ley resentment towards God as a result of a "No" from Him, this book is for you. It will help shift your perspective and show you how God's "No" is a part of His greater plan. Get your copy here!
I hope one of these books stood out to you and that you enjoyed reading this blog post. Whether you are learning to wait on God's timing, seeking hope during dark times, taking bold steps of faith, discerning God's voice, or dealing with disappointment, I pray that these books will guide you closer to God and strengthen your faith in Him.
