There's Power in the Tongue: Watch What you Speak Over Yourself

"The tongue has the power of life and death."~ Proverbs 18:21

I was listening to a sermon by Sarah Jakes Roberts which ended with her husband, Pastor Toure Roberts, asking the congregation to speak out loud the things that they were speaking death over and the things that they were speaking life over. So, as I'm listening, I'm also speaking out loud what I'm speaking life over and death over in my life (speaking life over meaning the good things and speaking death over meaning the bad things, ie. death over procrastination in my life and life over the abundance that I'm about to step into).

When the sermon ended, I spent some time with God and as we were talking I started sharing some of my fears with Him and some of my language was: "Lord, I am scared. Lord I am terrified. etc." And as I was saying those things out of my mouth, after just a moment ago of empowering praise and worship, I realized that this had been my language for the past couple of weeks.

Now, I am all here for being open about how you feel - in fact if you should be honest about your fears and share them with anyone, it should be with God. But this is not about that.

This is about the fact that I had been speaking fear and anxiety over my life and it was reflected in how I felt. I wasn't just talking about it in my prayer time, it was how I expressed myself about my life and how I felt constantly. Even in speaking about the good things happening in my life, my language has been "It's happening so fast, I'm so scared."

Instead of speaking life over myself, I have been speaking fear and anxiety over myself and in that moment as I was talking to God, I realized how powerful my tongue really was because just like I felt empowered after the sermon, speaking life over myself, I have been feeling fear and anxiety because of the words I have been constantly speaking over myself.

So in this moment, I want to make the commitment and encourage you to make it as well, to own the power of my tongue and speak life over myself.

Our "I am" statements matter so instead of constantly saying "Lord, I am scared", I will start staying:

"Lord I am thankful for you are with me always."
"Lord I trust that you have made a way."
"Lord I trust that your will will be done for my good and for your glory."

I hope this spoke to you and encouraged you to take authority over the power of your tongue and speak life over yourself more often.
