7 Journaling Prompts to Help You Unpack Your Week with God

We often don't realize how much we're carrying until we give ourselves the space to process it. It's so easy to numb ourselves with food, binge-watching our favorite shows, scrolling endlessly, or just staying busy. All the while, the things we're carrying go unaddressed and pile up, eventually leading to a breakdown that could have been prevented.

This is why one of my favorite things to do on Fridays is journaling out my feelings, frustrations, and thoughts from the week. This process feels really therapeutic and allows me to address any pent-up feelings I have about the week, so I can move on and fully be present during the weekend. It also helps me rest knowing that I don't have any unfinished business that can linger in my mind and make me anxious all weekend. Everything gets released and addressed on paper.

Below is a list of prompts I like using for my weekly unwinding with the Lord.

Addressing your journal entries to God

I noticed a huge difference in my journaling time when I started addressing my journal entries to God. Instead of “Dear Journal” or “Dear Self,” I start my journal entries with “Hey God,” “Dear Jesus,” or even just “What's up, God.”

It's a simple shift, but it allows you to feel more connected to God and to tangibly invite Him into your mind, your thoughts, and your life! As you go through these prompts and write out your thoughts, I encourage you to try it. Address your journal entries to God and treat your journaling time as a time to check in with Him about whatever is on your mind!

  1. What drained you this week?

Write to God about the things that left you feeling emotionally or mentally worn out. Maybe it was people, situations, responsibilities, or even your own thoughts. Be open and honest with Him about it. Ask Him to help you release whatever it is that’s been draining your energy so you can rest and reset.

  1. What brought you joy this week?

Tell God about the moments that made you smile or feel alive this week. It could be something small or unexpected. Let this be a moment of gratitude. Thank Him for the ways He showed up, especially in the ordinary stuff we often overlook.

  1. What still feels unresolved?

Use this time to talk to God about anything that feels unfinished, confusing, or heavy. Maybe it’s a decision you haven’t made, a conversation that didn’t sit right, or emotions you haven’t had time to deal with. Let Him into the gray areas. Ask Him for clarity or peace as you sort through it.

  1. Did you feel close to God this week?

Be honest with God about where you’re at with Him. Maybe you felt distant. Maybe you had moments where you really sensed His presence. Maybe you’re not sure. Write about it. Invite Him into your spiritual highs and lows without pressure or shame.

  1. What do you need to let go of?

Is there something you’ve been clinging to that you know isn’t helping you? A thought, a mistake, a fear, a habit? Write it down and bring it to God. Ask Him to help you surrender it. This is a space to be free and to let Him carry what you weren’t meant to hold onto.

  1. What are you grateful for right now?

Gratitude shifts your focus and recenters your heart. Write to God about the people, moments, or simple gifts you’re thankful for. Even if it’s been a rough week, try to find one or two things worth celebrating. Let that thankfulness shape your perspective going into the weekend.

  1. What do you want to carry into next week?

Take a moment to think about what’s worth holding onto as you move forward. Maybe it’s a truth God reminded you of, a boundary you want to keep, or a mindset shift you want to maintain. Talk to God about it. Let Him speak into your vision for the week ahead.
